Several young artists from the Astana Opera Theatre made their debut in Mukаn Tulebayev’s opera ‘Birzhan-Sara’, portraying the love story of two protagonists, El.kz cites astanaopera.kz.

The national classic gem captivated the capital’s audience for two consecutive nights. The leading roles of Birzhan and Sara were performed by Honored Figures of Kazakhstan, including Meir Bainesh, Beimbet Tanarykov, Bibigul Zhanuzak, and Aigul Niyazova. Among the young soloists were Valeriy Selivanov and Altynbek Abilda, portraying Kozhagul and Zhienkul. They underwent thorough preparation, dedicating about two months to fully immerse themselves in the characters.

“The preparation for the role was extensive and challenging. We devoted significant time to perfecting pronunciation and developing the character, working closely with the director and concertmaster. A tremendous effort went into the music. I really liked the role not only for unveiling the character as a vocalist but also for showcasing brilliantly composed music. To highlight its unique color, the performance required greater emotional expression,” Valeriy Selivanov, Astana Opera artist, said.

On his part, Altynbek Abilda admits that portraying the role of Zhienkul required a significant professional approach, given its wide range of vocal techniques and numerous low notes. The character of Zhienkul, portrayed with a negative demeanor and actions in the script, stands in complete contrast to the artist’s own nature.

“I meticulously prepared for this role. The character I play is an antagonist, so it required extra effort and immersion into the character’s mindset. While I am generally a calm person, this role contrasts somewhat with my nature in terms of temperament. I tried to fully immerse myself in the role and embody it,” said Astana Opera soloist Altynbek Abilda.

The performance places special emphasis on splendid stage costumes and vibrant, technologically advanced set designs, immersing the audience in an authentic world of the past. And, of course, the music plays a crucial role, truly making the viewers empathize with the characters. Over two consecutive nights, the theater’s symphony orchestra was conducted by Abzal Mukhitdin, an Honored Worker of Kazakhstan.
