Astana hosts round table on role of youth in the new constitutional stage

Astana hosted a round table titled "Youth in the Outline of the New Constitutional Stage," organized by the Jastar Research Center.

Participants included representatives of youth organizations, the expert community, and public institutions. The main theme of the meeting was the role of youth in the new social stage following the national referendum, as well as their participation in the development of civic culture and public processes. Participants noted that today’s youth agenda extends far beyond formal participation in political life. The discussion centered on issues of justice, rights and freedoms, active citizenship, involvement in social processes, and the formation of new public expectations. It was emphasized that the younger generation is increasingly establishing itself as a full-fledged participant and is actively engaging in discussions on topics that directly affect the country's future.

Participants paid special attention to the digital environment. During the discussion, it was noted that the lives of young people today are closely linked to the online space, which has become an integral part of communication, information gathering, and self-expression. Consequently, issues of access to information, exchange of opinions, and the protection of personal data were identified as some of the most relevant for young Kazakhstani citizens. The Director of the Jastar Research Center noted:

"Today, justice, legality, rights, and freedoms are particularly important for young people. The digital environment plays a major role in their lives because it provides the opportunity to receive information, exchange opinions, and disseminate their ideas."

Furthermore, the round table addressed the interest of youth in innovations, startups, and new formats of employment. According to the participants, modern young people are increasingly involved in the technological and entrepreneurial environment, making issues of development, self-realization, and access to new opportunities particularly significant. This topic was part of a broader conversation about how the demands of the younger generation are changing and which values are becoming important to them under the new conditions.

Another prominent topic was ecology. Participants stated that environmental issues can no longer be perceived as a narrow field of interest only for specialists or specific activists. The environmental agenda requires broader public involvement, and youth can play a key role in this process.

"Ecology should not remain a topic only for environmentalists or individual activists. It is a matter for every citizen. If youth, volunteers, and public associations talk about this on their platforms and with their audiences, then we will be able to see real results”, Nurasyl Bekmatov, Head of the Republican Headquarters of the “JASYL EL” Youth Labor Brigades emphasized

Participants emphasized that the focus should be not only on one-off campaigns but on more systemic work, including joint environmental initiatives that could unite youth organizations at the national level. There is a need for educational outreach and the formation of a sustainable ecological culture in which youth could become one of the primary driving forces.

In addition, the round table touched upon the topics of volunteering and youth employment. Participants noted that volunteer activities should be perceived not as a secondary or symbolic practice, but as a full-fledged form of social participation. Through volunteering, young people gain experience, learn self-organization, become involved in solving specific social tasks, and establish themselves as a genuine social force.

Overall, the youth agenda today covers several directions simultaneously. An active role for youth is being formed, and young Kazakhstanis themselves are increasingly viewed not as passive observers, but as active participants in social change.
