Astana hosts international seminar of environmental experts

The Regional Seminar on Monitoring, Assessment and Information Exchange in Transboundary Basins of Central Asia, organized by the International Water Assessment Center together with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe and the Green Central Asia Program of the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), began its work in Astana, El.kz reports with reference to the press service of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The seminar is attended by experts from five Central Asian countries (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan), representing state bodies and national services responsible for water resources, the environment and hydrometeorology, as well as specialists from scientific institutes, basin water management organizations, and international organizations operating in the region.

Experts from Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, the World Meteorological Organization, the International Sava River Basin Commission, the International Network of Basin Organizations and the International Groundwater Resources Assessment Centre also participate.

The seminar is organized to assist countries in learning about international experience in monitoring, assessing and exchanging information in transboundary basins and discussing opportunities for strengthening cooperation between Central Asian countries in the field of protection and use of water resources in transboundary basins.

The workshop will consider different practices and approaches to monitoring, assessment and information exchange in transboundary basins, including the application of harmonized and comparable assessment methods and the development of data management.

In addition, the seminar is expected to discuss preparations for the UN Water Conference, which will be held on March 22-24, 2023 in New York under the chairmanship of Tajikistan and the Netherlands.
