Books by Kazakhstani author Daniyar Sugralinov were used to train an AI model, and the matter has now reached the courts, El.kz reports.
The writer shared the news on his Facebook page that his books had been included in the database used to train an American AI. The list contained 28 of his works.
The situation has sparked widespread public attention. Sugralinov explained that he learned about it through the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association of America. The organization, along with others, is currently engaged in a lawsuit against the developer company.
According to the association, the models were trained on works downloaded from pirate websites. The court has already ruled that this does not fall under “fair use,” and the case has moved into a class action stage to determine compensation.
The dataset also included works by other famous authors, such as Stephen King. The association has already warned writers that the list is incomplete, and other affected authors may join the lawsuit.
