Melodies of the Steppe: Exploring Kazakhstan’s Musical Legends

Hey, travelers! Welcome to another episode about Kazakhstan! Today, we’re following the legacy of Kazakhstan’s musical legends, whose melodies capture the soul of the steppe. I’ll guide you to the museums and memorials where you can discover their stories!

First up is Kurmangazy Sagyrbayuly, the father of Kazakh kuis—melodies that echo the wind of the steppe. This 19th-century dombra master left dozens of soulful compositions. You can see his instruments at the Museum of Folk Musical Instruments in Almaty, located in the beautiful Panfilov Park.

Next, Dina Nurpeisova, a legendary female composer and Kurmangazy’s student. Her dombra kuis tell stories of nomadic life. Check out her dombra at the same Almaty museum. Her memorial is in Atyrau Region, where her music still inspires.

Don’t miss Abai Kunanbaev, a poet and musician whose songs united the Kazakh people. Visit the Abai Museum in Semey, packed with his instruments and manuscripts—a must for culture lovers. His mausoleum is located in the Zhidebai tract in the Abai District of the Abai Region of Kazakhstan

And finally, Zhambyl Zhabayev, an akyn whose poetic improvisations won hearts. His museum is located in the Zhambyl District of the Almaty Region, where you can feel his vibrant legacy.
