The enforcement of interethnic friendship and concord stipulated progress in the sports sphere of Kazakhstan. The Uyghurs is one of the ethnic groups widely represented in the country. The number of Kazakhstani Uyghur athletes who have achieved success in international competitions is rather big. Who are they?   To answer this question, we have sudied the long and rich history to make up a list of our Uyghur brothers who contribute to the development of sport in our vast country.

Makhmut Omarov (1924-1961): Honored Master of Sports of the USSR, two-time silver Olympic medalist (Melbourne, 1956, Rome, 1960), Candidate of Medicine, colonel. He was born in Almaty in 1924. Having obtained a certificate of secondary education magna cum laude, Makhmut entered the Workers’ Faculty of Almaty Medical Institute.  When the Great Patriotic War broke out in 1941, he was sent to study at S.Kirov Military Medical Academy. In summer 1943, he served in air landing troops.  His first landing in the enemy’s support area took place in Kursk. Holding a medical case in on hand and an automatic gun in another, Makhmut participated in special operations. It was in Germany where the Victory Day found Senior Lieutenant Makhmut.  After the end of the war in 1945, he continued to study at S.Kirov Military Medical Academy. In 1953, he defended his Candidate’s thesis. Starting from 1953, Omarov served in USSR National Pistol Union in Soviet Army. He ranked first during a 1954 team competition and was awarded the Cup of Lyon. In 1955, he became the Champion of Europe (Bucharest).  During the period of 1956-1961, he became the USSR Champion six time and won the title of the Champion of Europe as well as silver medals of the Olympics held in Melbourne (1956) and Rome (1960), besides, Makhmut won European team championships and  was a three-time World Champion. Makhmut was a very learned person. Apart from Russian and Uyghur, he spoke German and Latin. He died of heart attack in Leningrad in 1961, aged 37.

Abdrashit Abdrakhmanov: Master of Sports, Merited Coach of Kazakhstan in Boxing and Wushu Sanda, Merited Artist of Kirghizstan. He was born in Almaty in 1946 and graduated from the Institute of Physical Culture. He won the USSR Junior Competition, the USSR Cup, international tournaments held in Europe, Africa, and America. Eleven-time Champrion of Kazakhstan, four-time Champion of the USSR, four-time Champion of the Friendly Army (Dinamo). Abdrashit is not only an athlete but also a gifted actor. In 1969, he represented USSR during a USSR-USA matching meet in Las Vegas. When on the plane, he met the famous Kazakh film director Shaken Aymanov, who offered him to try his hand at film acting. His first film was an autobiography titled The White Square (1970), in which he played the lead part of a professional boxer. Cinema became an essential part of his life. He played Captain Kadyrov in The Triple Jump, that of the ruler in Panthers and Beybarys Sultan, and a role of a millionaire in Otyrardyn Kuyreui and The Acarus. During the period of 1990-1996, he played the role of a devoted dumb bodyguard in the 5-series history film Yermek by Mosfilm Studio, which he did fantastically.  He was awarded the International Prize for the film Borandy Beket based on the novelette “Gasyrdan Da Uzak Kun” by Chingiz Aytmatov in Luxembourg. He playd the starring role of Yedyge in it. Abdrashit has played in over 15 films.

Makhmud Yeskendirov: Vice-President of the RK Gymnastics Federation, Merited Coach of the RK. He was born in Almaty in 1947. In 1970, he graduated from Kazakh State Institute of Physical Culture. He has a 15 years’ experience in artistic gymnastics. Merited Physical Culture and Sports Worker of the USSR. He has been the headmaster of a specialized school since 1997. He has instructed over 1000 athletes in artistic and rhythmic gymnastics as well as aerobics. Participant of the Federation Internationale de Gymnastique Congeress. Member of the National Olympic Committee of Kazakhstan.

Tuygun Nasyrov: Master of Sports in Ski Jumping, Merited Coach of Kazakhstan. He was born in Tokkuztar (Kulzha) in 1948. Kazakh National Insitute of Physical Cultur Graduate. 10-ime Champion of Kazakhstan, medal awardee in winter sports at All-Union Universiade (1972), 5-time Champion of Military Forces of the USSR, participant of seven USSR Spartakiads. He was a coach of the RK Army Central Club and the national ski jumping team for about 20 years (1975-1994). Bronze medal awardee of 1978  USSR Spartakiad, silver medal awardee in 1982, and the champion in 1990. Three-time awardee of the USSR Champion Coach Medal. He was awarded a commemorative medal for instructing the champion of the 75 JAHRE SKI – CLUB SCHONWALD European Cup  (1982).

Khamit Barayev: USSR Master of Sports in Boxing. AIBA Internationally Certified Judge (1998), Professor, RK Academy for Sports and Tourism, Head of the Sports Department. He was born in Kulzha in 1952. His career began at Kazakh National Institute of Physical Culture (1977). Ex-coach of Burevestnik Sports Club (1978-1984).  Founder of the sports club of Boarding School 5 (1984-1988). In 1988, he became the Chief Coach of the Republican Youth Sports School. He was awarded the title of a Merited Coach of the Republic of Kazakhstan for his many years’ career in top-class athlete coaching (1991). The XUAD Sports Community invited him to train boxers for international tournaments in Urumqi (1993-1994). Chief Coach of the National Boxing Team of the Islamic Republic of Iran (2003-2004), Head of the Kazakhstani Sports Delegation in Mexica and the USA, judge at international tournaments held in Poland, India, China, Turkey, and Pakistan.

Rakhimzhan Sadykov: USSR Master of Sports in Boxing. He was born in Otenay, Almay Region, in 1960. In 1996, he graduated from Kazakh Academy for Spors and Tourism. Multiple Champion of the Kazakh SSR, winner of USSR Championship, Champion of Dinamo SS (1977-1978), Navy Champion (1980), multiple Champion of all-Union tournaments. RK Top Class Coach. He instructed Champions of Kazakhstan, silver and bronze medal awardees of world championships (2002-2003), prizewinners of various international tournaments held in Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Ukraine, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Kirghizstan, and other countries. In 2004, he was one of the coaches who instructed the participant of the Greek Olympics Bakhtiyar Artayev.  

Rakhimzhan Aznabakiyev (1955-2001): Merited Coach of Kazakhstan. He was born in Almaty. In 1975, he graduated from the Industrial College, and in 1989 from Almaty State Institute of Physical Culture and Sports, specializing in grass hockey coaching. He worked as a coach at the Republican School of Supreme Athletic Skills  (1979-1993). Rakhimzhan’s students made the womens’ national team of Kazakhstan and played in the USSR Supreme Hockey League. The Kazakhstani teams won prizes at USSR tournaments, Spartakiads, and sport tournaments of the people of the USSR.

Ayat Ilyakhunov: Merited Coach of the Republic of Kazakhstan, President of the Free Sparing Federation. He was born in Almaty in 1957. He worked as a hand-to-hand fighting coach and instructor. Founder of the Almaty Club, Young Trooper Bishkek Kalalarynda  in the mountainous area of Almaty, Bishkek. In 1986, he became the President of the Wushu Federation. That year, he arranged the first Wushu Sanba tournament in USSR and the first international tournament in Kazakhstan. At that time, over 50 athletes became Champions of Asia, Europe, and World Champions.  In 1998, an amateur Free Sparing Federation was founded. Ayat Ilyakhunov was elected its President.

Gafur Tokhiyev: International Grade Master of Sports in Karate, 5th dan. He was born in Taldykorgan, Altynemel, in 1967. He obtained higher education in Almaty. Six-time Champion of Open Karate Cup, Champion of the USSR Central Army Sports Club (Moscow, 1990). Prizewinner at various international tournaments, bronze medal awardee of the US International Championship (New York, 1994). He trained over forty champions in karate kickboxing, wushu sanda, and hand-to-hand fighting, in particular 6 World Champions, 1 Champion of Asia, 2 silver and 1 bronze medal awardees of international tournaments.

Paradzhan Tokhtakhunov: International Grade Master of Sports in Wushu Sanda. He was born in Sunkar, Uyghur District, Almaty Region, in 1967. He graduated from Kazakh Principal Academy for Architecture and Construction in 1994 and from Academy for Economy and Law in 2004 году. Multiple Champion of Kazakhstan in wushu sanda and kickboxing, Champion of Yelukhan Professional Sports Club International  Cup Tournament (1996-1997), bronze award winner of Thai Boxing World Championship (Bangkok, Thailand, 1994), winnder of a USA-Kazakhstan match meeting (1998), Champion of Central Asia in professional wushu sanda (1996), silver medal awardee of USSR Students’ Boxing Championship in Kiev (1991).

Abdrashit Islamov: Merited Coach of the RK National Pentathlon Team.  He was born in Almaty in 1967. He graduated from Central Asian University specializing in Psychology and Pedagogy. Master of Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the USSR. Coach of the Olympic Champion A.Parygin (Atlanta, 1996), Men’s National Team (bronze medal, Championship of  Asia, Tokyo), Women’s National Team (bronze medal, Championship of Asia, Busan, 2002).

Munlukzhan Zhalilov: International Grade Master of Sports in Wushu Sanda and Kickboxing. He was born in Almaty in 1971. He entered a local institute and worked as a coach in the Free Sparing Federation. Multiple Champion of Kazakhstan in wushu sanda. Award winner in sparring at a Kazakhstan-USA match meeting. Silver medal awardee at World Championship (Italy), Champion of Asia (Vietnam), Amateur World Champion in Wushu Sanda.

Alik Zhalilov: International Grade Master of Sports in Wushu Sanda, Kickboxing, Thai Boxing, and Hand-to-Hand Fighting. He was born in Ulken Aksu, Uyghur District, Almaty Region, in 1976. Hand-to-Hand Fighting World Champion (Almaty, 2001), silver medal winner at of World Thai Boxing Championship (Thailand, 1997), silver medal winner of Kickboxing World Championship (Greece, 2004), silver prize winner at Wushu Sanda Championship of Asia (Philippines, 1996), silver prize winner at Wushu Sanda Championship (Vietnam, 2000), Absolute Weight Winner of the 1st International Amateur Full Contact Karate Tournament (Almaty, 2000), Winner of the International Amateur Hand-to-Hand Fighting Tournament (Karaganda, 1999), Champion of the 3rd International Tournament of the Yelukhan Professional Wushu Sanda Sports Club Prize (Almaty, 1996).

Shatlykzhan Khamrayev: – International Grade Master of Sports in Wushu Sanda, Kickboxing, and Hand-to-Hand Fighting. He was born in Almaty in 1977. He graduated from Kazakh State Academy for Sports and Tourism. Hand-to-Hand Fighting Champion of Kazakhstan, winner of the RK President’s Cup Muay Thai Tournament (2002), World Kickboxing Champion (Greece, Rhodes), silver medal winner of World Championship (2003), World Champion (2004).

Makhomedzhan Kurbanov: International Grade Master of Sports in Wushu Sanda, Kickboxing. He was born in Jambyl Region in 1977. Kyrgyzstan security official. Champion of Kyrgyzstan in Kickboxing, Taekwando, Ushu Sanda, champion of international kickboxing, taekwando, Thai boxing, and hand-to-hand fighting tournaments. Bronze medal awardee of World Hand-to-Hand Fighting Championship (2001), Bronze medal awardee of World Thai Boxing Championship (2003), Silver medal awardee of World Kickboxing Championship, World Thai Boxing Champion (2004).

Gulzara Azizova: International Grade Master of Sports in Kickboxing. She was born in Almaty in 1979. Kazakh Academy for Sports and Tourism graduate. Prizewinner of Kazakhstan Tournament, multiple champion, World Kickboxing  Champion (Greece), silver medal winner of  World Thai Boxing  Championship (Greece), bronze prize winner of 1997 Asian Cup, Bishkek. She is currently working at the Specialized College Boarding School of Shanyrak Neighborhood, Almaty.

Mukhtar Ruzybayev: Master of Sports in Boxing. He was born in Almaty in 1986. Kazakh National Technical University graduate. His boxing career began in 1997. He was awarded the title of Master of Sports at the age of 16. Winner of the International Tournament of the RK President N. Nazarbayev Prize  (2001, 2002), multiple champion of RK tournaments, multiple Champion of Demyanenko Prize International Tournament (1998-2001), winner of numerous international tournaments held in Azerbaijan (2002), Ukraine (2003), and Estonia (2004),  2002 Budapest World Championship prizewinner, 2003 World Championship prizewinner, Romania.
