The student team of Kazakhstan will perform at the XXXI World Winter Universiade in the USA (Lake Placid). The opening ceremony will be held today at the Olympic Center. The sports competition itself will last until January 22, 2023, El.kz reports with reference to the press service of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The Universiade, also known as the FISU World University Games, is the largest multi-sport event since the Olympic Games. Students from 50 countries will take part in the Winter Universiade.
"The honor of Kazakhstan will be defended by 78 athletes in 10 sports: biathlon, ice hockey (men), short track, figure skating, cross-country skiing, Nordic combined, ski jumping, speed skating, snowboarding, alpine skiing. Information about the course of the Universiade will be covered by the National Olympic Committee, and the live broadcast will be conducted by the Qazsport TV channel," the press service said.
The national team of Kazakhstan showed its best result at the home Universiade in 2017. Kazakhstanis then won 11 gold, 8 silver and 17 bronze (36 in total) medals, taking second place.
