Preparations for 3rd Session of NPT PrepCom addressed in Vienna
On the initiative of Kazakh side a thematic seminar was held at the United Nations office in Vienna to discuss preparations for the third session of the Preparatory Committee (PrepCom) for the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT),El.kz cites Kazakh FM,
The seminar was traditionally organized by the Permanent Missions of Kazakhstan, Austria, and Switzerland, with moderation by renowned international expert, Tariq Rauf.
Kazakhstan’s chairmanship of the second PrepCom session in Geneva in 2024 played a key role in restoring positive negotiation dynamics, establishing a constructive foundation for future discussions within the PrepCom framework. The main outcome of this session was the Chairman’s Working Paper, which outlined the factual status of NPT implementation and highlighted the most urgent issues regarding the three pillars of the NPT.
In his address, Kazakhstan’s Permanent Representative to the International Organizations in Vienna, Mukhtar Tileuberdi, reaffirmed Kazakhstan’s steadfast commitment to the goals and principles of the NPT, which faces unprecedented challenges amid the current complex and unpredictable geopolitical landscape. He urged delegations to engage in constructive dialogue, improve treaty adherence, strengthen confidence-building measures, and seek pragmatic solutions to further fortify the NPT regime.
The seminar also focused on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Discussions underscored the significance of Article IV of the NPT, which recognizes the right of states to develop nuclear technologies for peaceful purposes. A notable example of successful NPT implementation was the operation of the IAEA’s low-enriched uranium bank in Kazakhstan, along with other international initiatives that contribute to the development of safe and sustainable nuclear energy.
The upcoming third session of the NPT PrepCom, scheduled to take place in New York from 28 April to 9 May 2025, will serve as the final stage of preparation for the 2026 Review Conference, the outcome of which will shape the future of the global non-proliferation regime.
